If you’ve ever had a conversation with Karen, you know she’s not just here to talk numbers—she’s here to help nonprofits thrive.
With a strong background in nonprofit finance and a natural gift for connecting with people, Karen spends her days helping mission-driven organizations find clarity in their financials and peace of mind in their processes. But there’s more to her than spreadsheets and strategy calls. Get to know Karen in her own words:
What’s a piece of advice you find yourself giving to nonprofits over and over again?
“Two things: First, the importance of having accurate and transparent financial reports—especially when you’re seeking additional funding like grants. Second, automate as much as you can. Strong internal controls start with streamlined systems.”
What’s a book, podcast, or TV show you’re currently loving?
“I’ve been loving ‘Yellowstone’ and now I’m watching the spinoff ‘1923.’ The storytelling and character depth really draw me in!”
What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy week?
“My happy place is the beach. My husband and I love taking day trips to explore Florida’s many unique beach towns—each one has its own personality, and there’s always something new to discover.”
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“‘Instead of always voicing your opinion, sit back, listen, and then react.’ That’s helped me become a better leader. It creates space for others to contribute and share ideas that ultimately make our team stronger.”
Is there a moment in your business development role that made you say, “This is why I do what I do”?
“Absolutely. When a nonprofit becomes a client and I talk to them months later, hearing how we’ve helped them and how grateful they are—it’s incredibly rewarding.”
What’s a client financial success story that you’re particularly proud of?
“We helped a client streamline their systems and processes, which allowed them to reduce staffing costs. With the savings, they launched a new program to support people in need. That’s impact.”
What’s the most common misconception people have about nonprofit financials?
“People think nonprofit accounting isn’t much different than for-profit. That is—until grant reporting or audits come into play. Then the lightbulb goes off!”
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
“Helping nonprofits find ways to be financially sound. When they have clear, accurate financials, they can secure more funding and grow their impact. That’s what it’s all about.”
What’s your favorite way to give back?
“I’m currently serving as treasurer of a local board. I used to be a finance director, and this lets me revisit the fun part of analyzing finances—it’s my kind of volunteering!”
What’s a non-work skill or hobby that surprisingly helps you in your role?
“I’m a team player at heart. That mindset helps me value different perspectives, which makes me a better manager and collaborator.”
